Big news in the world of emojis! According to a proposal reported on by Mashable, emoji creators at the Unicode Technical Committee are working towards a more inclusive collection, and they’re particularly focused on hair types.
First cab off the rank will be a redheaded emoji (Hurrah). Next up, curly hair and also silver hair and indeed, no hair at all. Yes, a bald emoji is coming – no doubt Cara Delevingne will be excited about that!
But back to the gingers. In the proposal it was mentioned that Unicode (yes, there really is such a thing) has received continual requests for emojis to be more inclusive and diverse, but one hair shade was the most requested and by a long shot. That shade, of course, was red.
A petition was started on Change.org demanding that red-haired emojis be added to the emoji mix and ASAP. It was shared worldwide with more than 20,000 redheads signing up.
The petition read; “Redheads … in all their glorious gingerness, have been missed out. Again.
“If you say you’re going to diversify, why not add a few red-haired emoji into the mix. Natural redheads may be rare at less than 2 per cent of the world’s popular, but that is 138,000,000 iPhones waiting to happen.”
Good point. And also, a fair enough request. The Jessica Rabbits of the world have been ignored for far too long. Still, it appears that is about to change.
Yes, the redheaded emoji is just a design at this stage and the final version is likely to look a little different. But at least you can get an idea of how your very own emoji will appear. Seeing a prototype also reinforces the idea that the much-desired ginger emoji is very much on its way. And not a moment too soon!
